Souvenirs Des Sommets, alpinisme et photographie (Book) by Joe Bensen, New, in blister. French.
Memories of the summits, mountaineering and photography. This book traces the history of mountaineering through the specific imagery that this sport has given birth to, from the first painted works to the latest color photographs. These images, on the sidelines of Joe Bensen’s story, reveal the disturbing correspondence between mountaineering as a sport and photography, two activities which experienced simultaneous development and development at the start of the 19th century. The author is interested in the very first representations of sport by artists like Edward Whymper and George Baxter.
Little by little, paintings and drawings gave way, in the 19th century, to photography. It becomes the major mode of reproduction of mountain sports. Professional photographers like Vittorio Sella, Joseph Tairraz and the Abraham brothers took their bulky equipment with them when they went out in the mountains to take photos. Then, with the evolution of the equipment, the mountaineers began to photograph their own climbs. In the 20th century, photo equipment became simpler and more accessible, facilitating the appearance of amateur and professional photographers, such as Chris Bonington, Galen Rowell or Beth Wald.
This unique book celebrates the (often unpublished) images of those, known or unknown, who made the history of mountaineering and who bequeathed this iconographic heritage to future generations.
