About the Artist: David Roberts (1796-1864)
David Roberts was a Scottish painter and one of the most celebrated Orientalist artists of the 19th century. Passionate about travel, he journeyed through Egypt, Nubia, and the Near East between 1838 and 1840, where he created numerous on-site drawings and watercolors of ancient monuments.
Upon returning to England, he collaborated with the Belgian lithographer Louis Haghe to produce the monumental work The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & NubiaThis series of 247 lithographs, including the famous Volume 5, Plate 12 (The Sphinx and the Second Pyramid of Giza), is now regarded as a major historical record of the condition of Egyptian sites in the early 19th century.
