Motorcycles have always been synonymous with freedom: freedom from the constraints of gravity, wind resistance, distance, and time. Conceived in the 19th century, the motorcycle was born in a world where the fastest way for a human to travel alone was on the back of another living being. On a motorcycle, there is only the rider and a stripped-down engine, belching out violent combustion, speeding along a dusty road with only the smell of burnt oil and the wind in your face.

The fascination with motorcycles is undeniable: their speed, their design, their legendary riders, and their sheer cool all contribute to their magnetism. Motorcycles: The Impossible Collection is a compendium of the 100 most exceptional motorcycles of the 20th and early 21st centuries, from the rarest to the most famous. These exceptional machines include the 1948 Vincent Series Rapide, on which Rollie Free shattered the land speed record wearing nothing but a swimsuit; the iconic 1969 Easy Rider, made famous by Peter Fonda; and the 1973 Harley-Davidson XR750, Evel Knievel’s favorite motorcycle. New to this updated edition are the 2003 Dodge Tomahawk, the 2007 Shinya Kimura Spike, and the 2008 Bat Pod from The Dark Knight Rises.

The authors: Nicolas Stecher is a veteran automotive journalist. Ian Barry is an award-winning motorcycle artist and designer. He is currently working on the Falcon Ten, which will become a collection of unique motorcycles designed, developed, and built by Barry around ten flagship engines. The concept explores all aspects of the motorcycle, exploring its history, contemporary applications, and the latent forms that emerge as the project evolves.
