Textiles Tsujigahana, Kyoto Shoin’s Art Library.

Tsujigahana is a Japanese fabric dyeing technique that originated in the Muromachi period.

The technique of tsujigahana is shrouded in mystery because it is not clear who invented it or why it was called Tsujigahana. This technique lasted for two periods, from the Muromachi period to the Edo period, about 300 to 400 years. It was quickly forgotten after the rise of Japanese craftsmanship. But Tsujigahana nevertheless contributed greatly to the decorative art phase of the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
