Zhang Xiaogang, born in 1958 in Kunming, is a contemporary Chinese artist, surrealist symbolist painter. He lives in Sichuan and Beijing. Born in Kunming in the Chinese province of Yuannan in 1958, Zhang Xiaogang is a Chinese painter and a major representative of the contemporary Chinese avant-garde. His stylized portraits are inspired by the surrealist movement and maintain a formal and calm aesthetic. His works focus on the consequences of the cultural revolution and on the meaning of family, history and memory in modern China.
This catalogue offers a retrospective study of the evolution of the art of Chinese artist Zhang Xiaogang from 1989 to 2003, through texts (essays and excerpts contributed by art critics and exhibition curators) and illustrations of his paintings. A photographic chronology is included.
