Yves Tanguy (book) by René Le Bihan, Renée Mabin, Martica Sawin. Palantines Editions. 2001. Very good condition. Hardcover with slipcase (Very slight traces on the slipcase). 301 pages. In French language.
Apart from the precious exhibition catalogs (Paris, 1982, Stuttgart and Houston, 2001) there is today no volume on the work and life of Yves Tanguy. The last important monograph – Patrick Waldberg, 1977 – cannot be found today. It became necessary, following the centenary of the artist’s birth, to take stock of the knowledge acquired since then on the essential painter of Surrealism, hindsight giving this movement a force and a breadth without equal in the century. This new volume – and for the first time – offers the particularity of a double look at the work. This original angle, French and American, is necessary so much the life of Yves Tanguy, and even more his work, are marked by his dual nationality. These two studies are supplemented by a detailed biography illustrated with numerous unpublished documents. More than 130 paintings, from the greatest public and private collections, some presented for the first time, are reproduced with the greatest care.
First monograph since the essential work of P.Walberg (1977), this book revolves around the eyes of two art historians, one French and the other American, to fully grasp the duality of the work and of the life of the major artist of Brittany in the past century. In addition, prestigious contributions and flawless iconography will make it a reference volume.
