Zao Wou-Ki was born in Beijing in 1920. In 1948, he decided to settle in Paris where he attended the studio of Othon Friesz at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière, as well as the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He met Sam Francis, Riopelle, Soulages, Hartung, Giacometti, Vieira da Silva. Paul Klee’s work, seen in Bern in 1951, made him take a radical turn towards abstraction. Zao Wou-Ki is one of the most illustrious representatives of lyrical abstraction. Since 1941, exhibitions of his works have followed one another at a steady pace in all countries and the greatest museums of the world, presenting his multiple talents as a painter, painter-cartoonist, engraver, lithographer, illustrator.
