The architect Aino Aalto (1894-1949) is a great unknown behind her internationally renowned husband: Alvar Aalto. Aino Aalto is a Finnish architect and designer. She married Alvar Aalto in 1924 and designed furniture with him.

During the early years of their marriage, while designing furniture together, Aino Aalto and Alvar Aalto submitted separate entries to architectural competitions. By the mid-1920s, the Aaltos had become the first architects in Finland to adopt the clean style of functionalism in architecture from Central Europe, as demonstrated in Aino Aalto’s design for the exhibition’s Finnish pavilion competition. 1939 from New York (the competition was won by Alvar Aalto).

In 1935, the Aalto couple, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl created Artek, a company that manufactured and sold lighting and furniture designed by the Aaltos.

Subsequently, Aino designed interior decorations, such as the Mairea villa, Noormarkku, 1938-1939, the Savoy restaurant as well as the furniture for the Paimio sanatorium, 1927-1929.

Aino Aalto also designs a lot of glasswork for Iittala. She also collaborated with her husband on the design of the famous Savoy vase.

As a designer, Aino Aalto is best known for her work on glass. However, his life’s work spans from architecture to photography and various fields of applied arts and design.

Featured and discussed in this book, she is a gifted and independent creator who was much more than her husband’s muse.
