André Masson, 1896-1987, is a French painter, engraver, illustrator and decorator.
Linked with all the intelligentsia of his time, both painters and writers, he is and will remain one of the great outstanding figures in the posterity of art history.

He participated in the surrealist movement during the years 1920-1945.
Famous for its automatic drawings and its sand tables, it is marked on an aesthetic level, by the spirit of metamorphosis and the mythical invention and even more by a visceral nonconformism,

His influence was mainly notable in New York during the Second World War, where he stayed while fleeing from Nazi Germany. His paintings indeed breaking with the classic diagram of figures standing out against a background, they serve as references to the painters Jackson Pollock and Arshile Gorky, founders of abstract expressionism.
