This original antique etching depicts the Septizonium (Septizodium) of Septimius Severus in Rome, also titled Septizonii Severi Sepulchrum. A dramatic 18th-century architectural view showing the towering ruins of this monumental Roman fountain built in 203 AD by Emperor Septimius Severus.

Plate number XXXVII (37) from a rare architectural series, rendered with masterful perspective, dramatic skies, and finely detailed classical ruins — characteristic of the style of Giovanni Battista Piranesi and his school.
