Arman (1928-2005) renowned French-American artist. Arman owned one of the largest private collections of African art in the world!

Kifwebe masks, from the art and tradition of the Songye, a community in the Congo, are among the most emblematic and easily recognizable African masks for Westerners. The Kifwebe are distinguished by their striations and color variations specific to each mask. Their half-closed globular eyes and rectangular mouth are characteristic features inseparable from this community in the Congo.

These African masks with polychrome decoration, a traditional art of Central Africa, were traditionally worn by dancers, used in particular during the initiation rites of boys or during funerals organized by a very influential secret society among the Songye.
