Artifices instables, histoires de céramiques / Unstable Artifices, Stories of Ceramics (book) Texts by Cecilia Canziani, Valérie Da Costa, Chus Martínez, Cristiano Raimondi and Agnès Roux. 2020. Edition in French and English. 408 pages. Softcover, very good condition.
This publication accompanies the exhibition Unstable Artifices, Stories of Ceramics, presented at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco – Villa Sauber and curated by Cristiano Raimondi.
With more than two hundred pieces, the project escapes the historical narratives of art that keep ceramics on the margins of the arts, and pays homage to this medium and studies it as a heterogeneous material capable of telling multiple stories.
Taking as its starting point the creation of the first Atelier d’Art Céramique in Monaco in the second half of the 19th century, the book portrays some of the leading figures in the history of ceramics in the Principality – the Fischers, Albert Diato and Eugène Baudin – and builds bridges and resonances with many artists, including Johan Creten, Simone Fattal, George Ohr, Ron Nagle, Pablo Picasso and Magdalena Suarez Frimkess, some of whom may be far apart in space and time, but nevertheless share deep connections and unexpected complicity.
The book brings together more than a century of visions inspired by this malleable medium and reflects the aspiration of ceramicists to provoke a change of perspective.
