Taslitzky, Boris (1911-2005) – Boris Taslitzky declared “My whole life has been influenced by wars and this has determined to a huge extent my militant life and my life as an artist”.

Boris’s father, Simon Taslitzky, an engineer of Russian origin, who took refuge in France after the failure of the 1905 revolution and volunteered for the 169th Infantry Regiment, stepped on a mine with his combat group on July 13, 1915. Boris’s mother, Anna Taslitzky, also a Russian refugee, was a seamstress. She was arrested during the Vel d’Hiv roundup in 1942, then deported and murdered in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz.

Orphaned by his father at the age of three, Boris Taslitzky was thus a victim of the First World War; he was a heroic actor in the Second, as well as an artist who witnessed these times of conflict, terror and resistance.

His clandestine action continued even when he was imprisoned in the French jails of Vichy, then deported to Germany to the Buchenwald camp. Boris Taslitzky is an artist and whenever he can, in the most critical circumstances, he draws. He draws to bear witness, he draws to resist: “To create is to resist!”

Many of these drawings have disappeared, others have been saved. A large number of them are now kept at the National Resistance Museum in Champigny-sur-Marne.
