The Saint-Émilion wine classification is the only one to be revised every 10 years. It is still considered the most modern and progressive of the classifications.

The uniqueness of Saint-Émilion wines lies in the combination of the dominant Merlot grape variety, which brings roundness and red fruit aromas, with a wide variety of clay-limestone terroirs that impart minerality and structure to the wines. This combination, combined with favorable climatic conditions, gives rise to elegant and complex wines, with good aging potential and velvety tannins, evolving towards deeper notes of leather, tobacco and chocolate.

Saint-Émilion wines are made primarily from Merlot, accompanied by Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot is the dominant grape variety. Cabernet Franc contributes structure and aromatic freshness, while Cabernet Sauvignon enhances tannins and aging potential. Other Bordeaux grape varieties, such as Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenère, are permitted but are used very marginally.
