Edward Hopper, 1882-1967, is an American painter and printmaker. Mainly practicing his art in New York, where he had his studio, he is considered one of the representatives of American realism, because he painted the daily life of the middle classes. At the start of his career, he represented Parisian scenes before devoting himself to American landscapes and becoming an attentive witness to social change in the United States. He produced many oils on canvas, but also worked on posters, prints (engravings) and watercolors.
Much of Hopper’s work, however, expresses nostalgia for a past America, as well as the conflict between nature and the modern world. In a “metaphysical atmosphere”, in a world that has become another where human relationships are almost obliterated, his characters are most often lonely and melancholy. A premonitary work of our current life.
