There are artists who work in the peace and quiet of their studio, who only come out of their ivory tower for an exhibition dedicated to them. Ernest Pignon-Ernest is one of them. He is even the archetype, because he pushes the approach to its extreme point.

He goes to the man he has decided to speak to. He goes to his home. In his street. And the drawing that he has prepared in his studio and that carries his message, he sticks it himself on the wall of the house he has chosen. The message is thus exposed. To all the winds, to all passers-by. It is concentrated in a place that multiplies in the city. This is what a man, Ernest Pignon-Ernest, says to other men.

And whether it is a street where children play, in Naples or in Ramallah, a vegetable market or a staircase that leads to a monument, it is seen, accepted, understood. Ernest Pignon-Ernest knows what he wants to say. And he says it with a force that has no equivalent in contemporary painting. With a concision and a quality of line worthy of the high era.
