Eugène Carrière (1849-1906) was an extremely famous artist in his time. A great friend of Rodin, he was avidly collected and in 1930 the sculptor Devillez donated forty paintings by the artist to the Louvre. Among its fans and patrons is also Paul Gallimard, father of the founder of the NRF. In 1896 in Geneva, the exhibition Puvis de Chavannes, Rodin, Carrière permanently marked the place of the artist in the history of art. The importance of the painter and of the man, the central role of his work in the art of his time, his presence in social life and thought at the turn between the 19th century and the 20th century have been amply commented on, essentially within the framework of symbolism, of which he is one of the principal actors. Its notoriety however declined from the post-war period, but recent works, including the monographic exhibition of the museums of Strasbourg (1996) and that, co-organized by the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo and the museum d’Orsay (2006), which associated his work with Rodin’s sculptures, brought to light the singular place of Carrière in French painting.
Rodolphe Rapetti, general heritage curator, symbolism specialist and curator of recent exhibitions dedicated to the artist. Véronique Nora-Milin, great-granddaughter of the artist and director of documentary films. Alice Lamarre, art historian, author of several texts devoted to Carrière.
