A painter’s book: Matisse’s first complete work conceived in gouache and cut papers, Jazz is his most accomplished painter’s book. The set of vivid and violent color plates is accompanied by handwritten calligraphed reflections from the artist, a perfect harmony of text and image. This work was made possible thanks to the collaboration and tenacity of two men: Matisse and Tériade.
Initially a leader of Fauvism, a movement characterized by the primacy of pure and violent colors, Henri Matisse distinguished himself from other movements that crossed the last century, such as Cubism or abstract art, to build a singular work around the balance of forms and colors.
