The Artist and the Atmosphere of the Work:
Born in Marseille in 1941, Jean-Claude Quilici is a major figure in contemporary Provençal painting, internationally recognized—notably in Japan and the United States—for his absolute mastery of Mediterranean light. In this piece, the artist captures the full dramatic intensity of the bullring. The striking contrast between the sun-drenched yellow of the background and the deep blue of the matador’s costume creates a vibrant, almost suspended atmosphere. Through bold, flat areas of color and a spirited, energetic brushwork, Quilici conveys the solitude, focus, and nobility of the bullfighter as he faces his destiny.
