This book is a testimony of rigor and timelessness which make us think today, that more than a decorator Jean-Michel Frank is a precursor, who from a piece of furniture, was an architect and beyond, an innovator .

Jean-Michel Frank, 1895-1941, was one of the main French decorators of the Art Deco period. His art is recognizable by its Cistercian simplicity and the strangeness of its proportions, its rejection of superfluous detail and its power of evocation. It is characterized by the skilful mixture of a dreamlike lightness and an almost dry rigor which could come from an archaic writing, before civilization. Locks, hinges and fixtures must therefore be invisible in these neat volumes with eradicated shapes.

In the late 1920s, Frank joined forces with cabinetmaker Adolphe Chanaux. Between the melancholy esthete from the most launched circles and the solid father of a family familiar with materials, techniques and know-how, one could easily have perceived an abyss of irreconcilable differences. It is however from this association that most of this furniture was to be born, constituting a work admittedly qualified as evocative, impenetrable, evanescent, but paradoxically also, a clear and decided work, immediately recognizable.
