This book bears witness to a rigor and timelessness that suggest Jean-Michel Frank was far more than a decorator: he was a pioneer who—starting with the design of a single piece of furniture—acted as an architect and, ultimately, an innovator. Jean-Michel Frank (1895–1941) was one of the leading French decorators of the Art Deco era. His art is distinguished by its Cistercian simplicity, unusual proportions, rejection of superfluous detail, and evocative power. It is characterized by a masterful blend of dreamlike lightness and an almost austere rigor—reminiscent of an archaic aesthetic that predates civilization itself. Thus, locks, hinges, and joinery are rendered invisible within these clean volumes and pared-down forms.

In the late 1920s, Frank partnered with the cabinetmaker Adolphe Chanaux. Between the melancholic aesthete from the most fashionable circles and the solid family man—an expert in materials, techniques, and craftsmanship—one might easily have perceived a gulf of irreconcilable differences. Yet, it was from this partnership that the bulk of the furniture emerged—a body of work described as evocative, impenetrable, and evanescent, but paradoxically also crisp, decisive, and instantly recognizable.
