Jean-Michel Frank, The Legends Collection (book) Text by Laure Verchere, introduction by Jared Goss. New book in English, 300 pages, with over 200 illustrations. 2019. Assouline. Hardcover in a luxury slipcase. Dimensions W 12.12 x L 15.27 x D 2.36 inches. Weight 10 lb.
This book portrays an iconic yet somewhat mysterious artist whose work illuminated the decorative arts of the 20th century. Jean-Michel Frank never attended architecture or design school, but during the 1920s and 1930s, this self-taught interior designer refined and perfected his unique style, which became a benchmark of Art Deco refinement. Gold, silk, marble, and fine wood veneers rubbed shoulders with straw marquetry, parchment, plaster, leather, canvas, and aged oak.
Collaborating with the greatest artists of the era, including Alberto Giacometti and Christian Bérard, Frank designed and artistically directed sumptuous yet refined interiors for prestigious clients such as Nelson Rockefeller and Elsa Schiaparelli, as well as for French institutions such as the Comédie-Française and the Hôtel Crillon.
Many of Jean-Michel Frank’s creations still have the power to transform a space with understated elegance and continue to inspire contemporary style. This essential book tells the story and presents the creations of one of the most influential designers of the 20th century.
