Rare collector’s book: Tropical Houses by Eric Touchaleaume (2006, 155 pages, 35 x 25 cm). This bilingual French/English book, in spiral-bound format, includes its original DVD.
This official exhibition catalog (Port des Champs-Elysées, Paris) details the complete history of the three famous tropical houses by architect and designer Jean Prouvé, built in Africa (Niamey and Brazzaville) and then brought back to France in 2000. The book (ISBN 9782909726038) contains most of the archival material on these prefabricated steel and aluminum structures.
A tireless researcher, Jean Prouvé collaborated with the leading architects of his time. With his modular designs, he demonstrated that it was possible to industrialize the construction sector by producing housing, much like the automotive industry. Transported by plane, these visionary structures were assembled on-site in just two weeks between 1949 and 1951.
In 2000, Eric Touchaleaume acquired the three prototypes, had them dismantled, and repatriated. One was reassembled on the banks of the Seine in Paris, and another joined the collections of the Centre Pompidou.
