The Bayeux Tapestry (book) by Xavier Barral i Altet and David Bates. Citadelles & Mazenod, 2020. Hardcover book with 256 pages in French. Dimensions: 10.82 x 10.23 x 0.98 inches. Like new.
The Bayeux Tapestry is a collection of two “miracles”: its exceptional visual richness and its remarkable state of preservation nearly a millennium after its creation. Nearly 70 meters long, it is part of the national histories of France and England, and has been included in UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” register since 2007.
Entirely needle-embroidered with colored wool threads, it recounts the conquest of the Kingdom of England by Duke William of Normandy in a long succession of images, making it the “ancestor” of the comic strip.
Much has been written about it, but the questions surrounding its creation and meaning remain enigmatic to this day. This book provides an update on the current state of research and allows us to delve into the fascinating history of this sumptuous embroidery.
