The Apocalypse, the founding text of Christianity, was written in the 1st century by Saint John, in exile on Patmos. His powerful prophetic visions inspired in the 14th century one of the most famous painters of the Middle Ages, Hennequin of Bruges, who designed for Duke Louis I of Anjou the largest set of tapestries ever made, a masterpiece of medieval art. This book reproduces the text of the Apocalypse illustrated by the seventy-five panels of the tapestry, magnified by numerous details and manuscript paintings filling the absence of the nineteen missing tapestries.
The commentaries of Paule Amblard, an art historian specializing in medieval art, illuminate the works, in constant and close relation with the story of the Apocalypse. In the alliance of this sacred text and this artistic masterpiece, the reader fervently travels to discover the message of hope and spiritual plenitude that the Apocalypse carries. The introduction “The path of the Apocalypse” by Paule Amblard reminds the reader of the context in which John experiences his visions.
She takes us on the fascinating trail of the history of the Angers tapestry and delivers with sincerity and emotion her own reading of the message of Saint John.
