The Apocalypse of Saint John, a foundational text of Christianity written in the 1st century by the apostle John in exile on Patmos, inspired one of the greatest masterpieces of medieval art: the Apocalypse Tapestry of Angers.
Commissioned in the 14th century by Duke Louis I of Anjou and created by the painter Hennequin of Bruges, this monumental tapestry remains the largest historical tapestry ever woven. This magnificent art book reproduces the entire text of the Book of Revelation, illustrated by the 75 surviving panels of the tapestry, enriched with numerous close-ups and superb manuscript illuminations that fill in the gaps left by the 19 lost tapestries.
Paule Amblard, an art historian specializing in medieval art and Christian symbolism, offers precise and insightful commentary. She juxtaposes the biblical narrative with the images of the tapestry, revealing the full iconographic and spiritual richness of the work.
In her introduction, entitled “The Path of the Apocalypse,” she places the visions of Saint John in their historical context and movingly shares her own interpretation of the message of hope and spiritual fulfillment contained in this prophetic text.
Combining sacred text and exceptional medieval art, this beautiful book invites the reader on a fascinating journey to the heart of the Angers tapestry, a jewel of French heritage listed on UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” register.
Perfect for lovers of medieval art, art history, antique tapestries, and Christian iconography.
