He tackled ethnographic subjects including The Lapps (1889), The Somalis (1890), Warriors and Warriors of Dahomey (1891) or The Paï-Pi-Bri (1893). From this point of view, he was one of the founders of scientific popularization. He also wrote stories such as Le Voyage au pays du bien (1878, Les chimes de Noël (1880), Les Sept femmes du colonel d’Arlot (1884) and Les Contes jaunes (1886).
