Throughout the ages, vines and wine have inspired the most varied representations. Artists have associated wine with the sacred as well as the profane, with collective manifestations as with intimate experiences, expressing both its qualities and its benefits as well as its harmful influence.
This book does not claim to provide a complete history of vines and wine, nor does it imagine presenting an exhaustive collection of their graphic and pictorial evocations. Its purpose is to explore some of the themes in which wine is the protagonist and to illustrate through major works the value of this cultural fact.
