Léonor Fini, original etching signed in pencil by the artist, with the typical “cat’s head” embossing. H.C. proof (off trade). Title: Portrait of Caroline. Total dimensions of the vellum paper: 14.96 x 11.02 inches. Sold unframed. Very good condition given its age. Magnificent proof with full margins.

Léonor Fini (1907-1996). Italian-French painter. She did not attend any art school and her training was entirely self-taught. Hence, no doubt, the difficulty in identifying her with a particular movement in contemporary art, her evolution having been marked above all by her own affinities.

From the 1940s to the early 1960s, she painted mainly portraits. Her favorite portraits are those of her friends: Anna Magnani, Maria Felix, Suzanne Flon, André Pieyre de Mandiargues, Leonora Carrington, Meret Oppenheim, Jean Genet, Jacques Audiberti, Alberto Moravia and Elsa Morante among others.

In the early 1960s, Leonor Fini moved to Paris, to an apartment on the rue de la Vrillière where she lived, surrounded by her friends and her cats that she adored, until her death in early 1996.
