Les grands magasins parisiens / Parisian department stores (book) by Philippe Verheyde. Hardcover book in French of 240 pages. 2012. Editions Balland. Condition: like new.
150 years of prestige, fashion and commerce
Le Bon Marché, Les Galeries Lafayette, BHV and Printemps. so many brands that seem to have always punctuated the lives of Parisians. When did they appear? Who was the first to invent mass consumption? If these department stores have not only revolutionized the purchasing behavior of the French, they have accompanied other important changes in society: new social model for employees (company canteen, creation of the first mutual insurance company), emancipation of women in their free time and in managing their budget, emergence of the idea of the customer-king and a tailor-made service. Philippe Verheyde studies these social developments through the development of several major brands, some of which have now disappeared.
In a second part, the book gives the floor to Gérard Uféras, a contemporary photographer who has captured the magical and prestigious atmosphere of these places, eternal ambassadors of good French taste.
* 80 unpublished archive documents loaned by department stores
* 50 unpublished contemporary photos
