In “Latin American Journeys,” Anni and Josef Albers explore the influence of the Bauhaus, Mexico, and Latin America on their art through pre-Columbian textiles, color theory, photography, formalism, pyramids, collages, unpublished manuscripts, and vibrant color plates. This 228-page catalogue, published by Hatje Cantz in 2008, documents for the first time the impact of the couple’s regular travels in Central and South America after their immigration to the United States in 1933.

Anni creates major textile works, simple and abstract paintings and drawings, while Josef develops his unique sense of color and independent photographic concepts. Their roots trace back to the German Bauhaus of the 1920s and 30s. Featuring previously unpublished letters, manuscripts, and photographs, the volume demonstrates that their art cannot be understood without their crucial encounters with the art, architecture, and textile design of pre-Columbian cultures. A striking chapter, Homage to the Pyramid, brings together Josef’s photographic collages depicting Mesoamerican pyramids, whose abstract and graphic quality directly echoes the artists’ paintings and textiles.
