After his trip to Provence, the author began writing the first texts with Paul Arène, which were published serially in the newspaper L’Événement during the summer of 1866 under the title Provençal Chronicles. Some of these stories remain among the most popular in French literature, notably Monsieur Seguin’s Goat and The Three Low Masses.
