Louis Valtat, catalog of painted works, volume 1, 1869-1952 (book) by Dr Jean Valtat. Hardcover book in very good condition except for a few marks on the dust jacket. Editions Ides et Calendes. 1977. Limited edition of 2000 copies. 360 pages. French edition.
Louis Valtat, close to Pierre Bonnard and Albert André, is a post-impressionist painter from the end of the 19th century. He adheres to the Fauvist movement of the early 20th century. Valtat’s early works, often landscapes and street scenes, used the lightness of impressionism, the colored dots of pointillism as well as luminous colors as in Péniches (Barges) (1892). Later, Valtat spent several autumns and winters on the Mediterranean, where he intensified his use of color and began to express more Fauvist tendencies, particularly in seascapes. However, he never fully adopts the bold colors and shapes that characterize the Fauves. Valtat’s comrades and contemporaries were Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, although Valtat remained distant from the synthesist movement which influenced them.
First volume of the catalog raisonné of Valtat’s work, under the direction of Dr Jean Valtat. This reference work on the artist lists and reproduces nearly 3,000 paintings, all authenticated by his son, Jean Valtat.
