Discover the definitive retrospective monograph dedicated to the painter Marie-Hélène Vieira da Silva, co-written by art critic Jacques Lassaigne and art historian Guy Weelen, a 366-page book in French published in 1992 by Éditions Cercle d’Art. (ISBN 9782702203231), in very good condition, like new, measuring 25.5 cm × 30 cm and approximately 4 cm thick. This exceptional art book comprehensively traces the evolution of her artistic career, from her Lisbon roots and training to her years in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière alongside her husband, Arpad Szenes, and her temporary exile in Brazil.
The texts and critical essays offer an in-depth analysis of her unique pictorial language—poised between geometric abstraction and lyricism—as well as her masterful approach to structuring space and creating light-filled, labyrinthine perspectives. The core of the book features over 360 illustrations, including approximately 130 high-quality color plates, allowing readers to trace the chronological evolution of her iconic masterpieces and lesser-known works on paper, such as lines of force, urban structures, and complex checkerboard patterns.
The dust jacket of this copy reproduces the major work *Bibliothèque* (1949), a perfect illustration of the artist’s obsession with interlocking architectural structures and the sensation of spatial vertigo. The documentary appendices—a detailed chronological biography and a selective bibliography of exhibition catalogues—make this an indispensable resource for collectors and enthusiasts of modern art. A rare, near-mint copy, ready to enrich your contemporary art library.
