Olivier Mosset painting even, author Catherine Perret, Les presses du réel, New York series, Paperback, new in blister, 112 pages, English texts.
Anonymity, neutrality and discretion are still among the characteristics of Mosset’s work. But should we fall into the trap of making this formal reserve the keystone of his painting? What if it were above all a tribute to the spirit of the times? A sign indicating the point where the extreme politeness on which his personal ethos is based meets the collective myths of the “man without qualities”, of the work without a subject or, in the American version, of pure objectivity.
The book is part of the New York series, created jointly by Les presses du réel and the French cultural services of New York to publish theoretical texts in English not only on contemporary art but also on dance and on emerging American performance more in tune with French thought. The series is inspired by a simple premise: contemporary culture is a public good that offers a perspective on the issues of our time. Today, contemporary art is increasingly commodified and yet underestimated in its ability to provide a new perspective on the globalized world in which we live. In touch with international debates, this series attempts to accompany this emerging perspective.
Olivier Mosset (born in 1944 in Bern, lives and works in Tucson) worked in Paris from 1965 to 1977, participated in the creation of the BMTP group and then moved to New York. He had numerous exhibitions with the Radical American Painters in the 1980s.
Mosset defines himself as a painter rather than an artist. His work is based on a principle of neutrality, radicalism and erasure that constantly questions the limits of painting. His approach consists of constantly returning to previous explorations and diversifying them, taking care to integrate into his conceptions the conditions in which they appeared, to modify his work according to the current cultural context, thus questioning painting in its initial materiality.
