A French couple of ceramicists from Vallauris. Originally from Nice, the Thiry family settled in the renowned pottery village of Vallauris in 1943. After studying at the School of Decorative Arts in Nice, Albert Thiry continued his training as an apprentice in various pottery workshops, notably with Saltalamacchia, Sagan, and Charles Voltz. Returning from the Algerian War in 1956, he joined Claire and René Batigne, who ran the Tapis Vert workshop, as a decorator for six years in Vallauris, where he worked alongside Marcel Vertès and Anton Prinner, who introduced him to sculpture. That same year (1956) before his departure for Algeria, he married Pyot Gavaudan (1933, born in Eygalières), who worked at the Giraud workshops as a decorator and model maker, after attending the School of Decorative Arts in Nice (1953) and working at the Concarneau workshop.
