Robert Indiana: Retrospective, 1958–1998, at the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain de Nice, France, was the first large-scale museum retrospective of Robert Indiana in Europe. The largest survey of Indiana’s career to date, it included works from five decades and marked the first public screening of The X-7 (1998) and The Seventh American Dream (1998). Seven recent constructions, including KvF (1991), Mars (1990), The American Dream (1992), USA (1996-1998) and Eve (1997) have been exhibited in a gallery devoted to large-scale wood carving.
On the occasion of this retrospective organized in Nice in 1998, he nevertheless took up a seventh variation of “American Dream”, this time devoted to three American women who came to live in France, namely: Joséphine Baker, Isadora Duncan and Grace Kelly.
