To accompany the exhibition on Roy Lichtenstein at the Center Pompidou, this collection of his posters is presented in a large format which highlights the inimitable style of this major figure of American Pop Art. The art of Roy Lichtenstein is one of the most recognizable, with his paintings reminiscent, in close-up, of comic strip vignettes made up of thousands of dots. It emphasizes America’s consumer culture, and Lichtenstein’s style lends itself easily to these types of large posters.
He can’t do that. “He just can’t do that,” exclaimed Leo Castelli and his assistant upon seeing Lichtenstein’s paintings in 1961. Three years later, the artist was featured in a Lite Magazine article titled “Is He the worst artist in the United States?”, and, three more years later, he exhibited on both sides of the Atlantic and received important commissions, notably for posters. Avant-garde before becoming world famous, Roy Lichtenstein ( 1923-1997) is an icon of pop art, in the same way as Robert Rauschenberg or Andy Warhol. His posters, whether they reproduce existing paintings or not, occupy a special place in his artistic production. Lichtenstein considered them as works in his own right throughout his career. From early comic strip scenes to landscapes from recent years, this work brings together for the first time seventy of these creations, thus inviting you to discover one of the artists from an original angle the most famous of the 20th century.
