An essential monograph on the founding member of the Gutai movement, a major figure in the Japanese avant-garde. A founding member of the Gutai movement alongside his mentor Jiro Yoshihara, Shozo Shimamoto emerged as a key figure in the Japanese avant-garde in the mid-1950s. His diverse body of work incorporates the physical involvement of both the artist and the viewer while transforming conventional notions of painting and sculpture. His performance art style constitutes an independent Eastern response to the abstract expressionism of Jackson Pollock and the Happenings of Allan Kaprow.

Shimamoto’s signature practice of throwing paint cans onto the canvas, developed in the 1950s and continued until his death in 2013, transforms splashes and debris (broken glass, etc.) into lasting material evidence of the performance. For him, as for the Gutai artists, the process takes precedence over the final result.

Born in Osaka in 1928, Shozo Shimamoto exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, MOCA Los Angeles, and the Jeu de Paume in Paris, and his work is part of the Tate Modern collection. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 for his pacifist activism.
