Works by the traditional Nihon-ga painter: Takayama Tatsuo. Takayama Tatsuo (1912-2007) was a Japanese painter of figures, landscapes, flowers, and murals, as well as a printmaker and illustrator in the traditional style with Western influences from the 20th century. While still a student, Takayama Tatsuo enrolled in the private Konohana-sha studio, directed by Matsuoka Eikyû, a renowned nihonga painter. Later, pursuing his goal of exploring new forms of creation in nihonga, he founded the Rusôga-sha group with Yamamoto Kyûjin and Sugiyama Yasushi. Strongly influenced by the personality and work of Paul Gauguin, he produced works with simplified forms treated in flat areas of color. He then developed a keen interest in nature and began painting landscapes, which resulted in numerous powerful works. In 1960, he made a major shift and focused his work on the study of the human figure, which remains today the central theme of a substantial body of work characterized by subtle and profound spirituality. Far from being content with the achievements of tradition, Takayama Tatsuo tirelessly pursued his quest for new directions in nihonga. These qualities make him, today, a prominent figure in the Japanese art scene.
The catalogue for this exhibition at the Espace des Arts, Mitsukoshi Etoile, from December 5, 1995 to February 3, 1996, is for Takayama Tatsuo’s first solo exhibition abroad. It features approximately fifty works created between the 1980s and 1995. These mature works will give the European public the opportunity to experience what represents the essence of this artist’s work.
