Terres de Saintonge (book) by Jean-Yves Hugoniot. Somogy éditions d’art, 2003. Very good condition, some marks on the cover. Softcover. French language.

This book takes the reader on the adventure of earthenware pottery in Saintonge, a hotbed of creativity for 6,500 years. Much more than a simple archaeological vestige, ceramics are an object of daily life, from birth to the grave; they are a true indicator that accompanies humanity in the evolution of its technicality, its tastes, its culture. Ceremonial pieces, pottery for funerary, domestic or culinary use, ceramics bear witness, over the centuries, to the rituals of men, to their way of living together: immense inventiveness of the potters of the Neolithic, who create forms of great plastic beauty and typical decorations, marked by the technique of imprinting on vases, bowls or bowls; production of building materials such as bricks, tiles or architectural elements in Gallo-Roman workshops; virtuosity of potters in the Middle Ages, golden ages of the 16th and 17th centuries, inventiveness of shapes and decorations up to the present day. Saintonge ceramics also provide information on population movements, the marketing of pieces and artistic influences.

Very early on, potters travelled and exchanged their know-how. This was also done by Bernard Palissy, the brilliant enameller, whose research in his workshop in Saintes forever changed the technique of ceramicists.

A reference work, with nearly 700 pieces reproduced, Terres de Saintonge allows us to discover the exceptional richness of this heritage, the constant creativity and the high mastery of the artisans of fire.
