A definitive work on the ceramics and pottery of Saintonge
Terres de Saintonge by Jean-Yves Hugoniot, published by Somogy Éditions d’Art in 2003.
Condition: Very good – some minor wear on the cover. Paperback. ISBN: 9782850566127. French texts.

This major work presents nearly 700 reproduced pieces and is an essential reference for discovering the exceptional richness of Saintonge’s ceramic heritage.

From Neolithic pottery to contemporary creations, including the Gallo-Roman period, the Middle Ages, and the golden age of the 16th and 17th centuries, this book traces 6,500 years of terracotta history in Saintonge.

Ceramics are explored not only as archaeological remains but also as objects of daily life: ceremonial pieces, funerary pottery, domestic, culinary, and architectural pottery (bricks, tiles). The author highlights the incredible inventiveness of the potters, their techniques (particularly the imprinting method), the evolution of forms and decorations, as well as technical exchanges and population movements.

The book also discusses the renowned Bernard Palissy, a brilliant enameller from Saintonge, whose research in Saintes revolutionized the history of ceramics.
