Images à la sauvette, photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson (book) New edition 2024. Small format 9.05 x 6.70 inches. 180 pages. New in blister pack. French text.

Images à la sauvette, is one of the greatest photography books ever published. It brings together the photographic work of the first twenty years of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s career. The result of the combined work of the photographer, the famous art critic and publisher Tériade, and a painter then at the height of his career. Images à la Sauvette was published in 1952 by Verve, with an original cover by Matisse. The American version, published the same year by the publishers Simon and Schuster, would unknowingly impose the formula of “decisive moment”.

A resounding success in the art world, considered a “bible for photographers” in the words of photographer Robert Capa, the book reveals the inherent duality of Cartier-Bresson’s work, between intimate interpretation and documentary observation. It remains an essential reference for a large number of photographers.

The original book, now out of print, has become a collector’s item. The Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation wanted to make this historical photography book accessible again in a new format, smaller and more practical than the original, at a less prohibitive price. This new edition, however, retains all the elements present in the 1952 original and is augmented by a study of the conditions of the work’s production, its critical success as well as the issues behind the choice of the title, written by Clément Chéroux, director of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation.
