In 1968, Provoke magazine was published in Tokyo by photographer and writer Takuma Nakahira, art critic Koji Taki, among others. Investigating the relationship between photography and text, the magazine was an artistic and philosophical manifesto, responding to the upheavals of the late sixties. The participating photographers, among them Daido Moriyama sought a radically new photographic language. Virtually unknown in the West, Provoke magazine is now recognized as a turning point in Japanese post-war photography. He greatly influenced many young photographers of the time. Provoke’s radical quest to break away from established forms of photography is boldly expressed in the titles of books published by Daido Moriyama and Takuma Nakahira.
In a unique way, unprecedented in Western photography, Bye, Bye Photography, Dear and Nakahira For a Language to Come by Moriyama organize and juxtapose dense and suggestive photographs to create a violent and radically poetic panoramic view of Japanese society. Nobuyoshi Araki’s response to their troubling challenge was his self-published Sentimental Journey, whose provocative fragility reveals a rare lyric lucidity. Originally published in very small editions (Provoke magazine had a circulation of 1000 copies), publications reprinted in The Japanese Box are extremely rare today and almost impossible to find, even in Japan.
