Sculpture vase by Alexandre Kostanda, the bull and the deer, Vallauris pottery. 13 inches high. Diameter approximately 8.66 inches. Excellent condition except one of the deer’s antlers was broken and glued back on.

Alexandre Kostanda (1921-2007) is a ceramist of Polish origin. Alexandre Kostanda founded his own workshop in 1953. He brought stoneware clay from Cluny, which could withstand higher firing temperatures, and mixed it with Vallauris earth. He was one of the ceramists who organized the Vallauris International Ceramics Biennial in 1968.

His production, sensual and plastic at the beginning, evolved towards a more refined ceramic. In Vallauris, despite the shimmering colours of local ceramics, Alexandre Kostanda maintains a predilection for muted colours, close to the natural hues of clay. His ceramics, with a rustic appearance, surprise with the finesse of their workmanship and the balance of their proportions, revealing Kostanda’s exceptional technical mastery.
