Discover this rare sculptural vase by Alexandre Kostanda—a Polish ceramicist who was a key figure of the Vallauris golden age—a unique piece depicting a bull and a stag, finely modeled in the true tradition of Vallauris pottery.

Height 13″ (33 cm), diameter approximately 8.66″ (22 cm), excellent overall condition (one deer antler broken and reglued; a neat, old restoration). Signed on the base “A. Kostanda Vallauris,” a signature typical of the artist.

Born in Poland in 1921, Alexandre Kostanda settled in France during his childhood. After completing an apprenticeship with Louis Giraud, he opened his own workshop in Vallauris in 1953. He blended Cluny stoneware clay with local clay to achieve high-temperature firing and exceptional durability. A key figure in Vallauris ceramics, he helped organize the Vallauris International Ceramics Biennale in 1968.

His style evolved from a sensual, sculptural phase toward more refined, minimalist forms. Staying true to the muted, natural tones of the clay, he distinguished himself from the colorful decorative styles typical of Vallauris through a “rustic-chic” aesthetic, characterized by perfectly balanced proportions and exquisite craftsmanship. An ideal collector’s piece for enthusiasts of mid-century ceramics, French ceramic art from the 1950s and 1960s, and vintage Vallauris design.
