Vincent Corpet, Analogies (Book) Musée d’art moderne de St Etienne Métropole. New in blister pack. French / English. 128 pages. 2002. Somogy éditions d’art.

Vincent Corpet is a contemporary French painter born in 1958. He lives and works in Paris.
Vincent Corpet represents a complex and disturbing figure of the current French art scene. The “analogies” constitute, with the nudes and self-portraits, one of the most abundant series painted by the artist for several years.

This catalog offers an unusual format of interviews: a dozen contributors from the art world and intimates of the artist question Corpet about his works, gradually bouncing off his answers and the comments of each. Thus, it is no longer a simple interview but rather an exchange of thoughts.

Analogies
Sliding from one motif to another, by formal associations: the principle of analogy in Corpet’s practice appeared in the 1980s. However, it is already at work in a whole section of painting, from its origins: from the walls of Lascaux where the shapes of the figures are born from the crevices of the rock, through the incitement to daydreaming advocated by Leonardo da Vinci, who imagines scenes by observing a wall smeared with stains, to the incessant metamorphoses and formal analogies created by Picasso.

In Vincent Corpet, this principle of analogies underlies most of the series, from still lifes transformed into religious subjects, through diptychs and childish paintings, to the Matrices and All Over series. Vincent Corpet’s analog works no longer have a reading direction and the forms represented no longer have a hierarchy: they call into question the single point of view imposed by classical perspective.
