Zao Wou-Ki (1920-2013), born in Beijing into a family of scholars, is one of the leading figures of lyrical abstraction and a master of contemporary Franco-Chinese painting.
A graduate of the Hangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, he moved to France at the age of 27. In 1948, he arrived in Paris and settled in Montparnasse. He attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and formed friendships with major artists such as Sam Francis, Alberto Giacometti, Pierre Soulages, and Hans Hartung.
His international reputation grew rapidly with numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Appreciated in the West, and a friend of Joan Miró and Henri Michaux, he was officially recognized in China in 1983, the year his works were exhibited at the National Museum of China in Beijing.
This reference monograph, published in 1978, offers in-depth documentation and exceptional iconography on the work of Zao Wou-Ki.
