Second Vallauris International Biennial of Art Ceramics – Exhibition Catalog 1970
Official catalog of the Second Vallauris International Biennial of Art Ceramics, July-August-September 1970. Preface by Paul Mejean.
Bilingual edition (French/English), approximately 60 pages. This rare catalog documents the artistic effervescence of Vallauris in the modern era, with a major focus on Pablo Picasso and the great post-war ceramicists.
Historical Context
While ceramics have existed in Vallauris since Antiquity, it was in the 16th century that a true pottery industry developed, becoming the town’s main activity in the 17th century. The 1950s marked a decisive turning point: traditional production gave way to a burgeoning contemporary artistic scene.
Even before Picasso’s arrival, Vallauris had attracted artists from the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, such as Roger Capron, Jean Derval, and Robert Picault. Picasso’s presence significantly amplified this movement and propelled Vallauris onto the international art scene, attracting artists like Gilbert Portanier and Roger Collet.
