This facsimile was made from copy no. 169 of the original edition of Jazz by Henri Matisse, Tériade publisher, Paris 1947.

The book Jazz presents the twenty or so lithographs made by Henri Matisse in 1947 for Tériade. These gouache and cut-out papers are accompanied by handwritten and calligraphed reflections, and essays by two specialists of the artist. Binding: Presentation in the form of four-page sheets, in a red canvas box that will allow this exceptional work to be preserved intact and protected from time.

Presentation texts by Dominique Szymusiak (curator of the Matisse Museum in Cateau-Cambrésis). Printing of the 20 plates in lithography. Paper: Velin BKF Rives 250 g specially manufactured for this edition by Antalis. Printing Arts Litho-Stéphane Guilbaud under the direction of Claude Draeger and Mario Ferreri.

A painter’s book: First complete work designed in gouache and cut-out papers by Matisse, Jazz is the most accomplished painter’s book. The set of plates in colors, bright and violent, is accompanied by handwritten calligraphed reflections by the artist, a perfect harmony of text and image. This work was produced thanks to the collaboration and obstinacy of two men: Matisse and Tériade.

First leader of Fauvism, a movement characterized by the primacy of pure and violent colors, Henri Matisse stands out from other movements that have crossed the last century, such as Cubism or abstract art, to build a singular work around the balance of shapes and colors.
